Without vaccines, COVID-19 fatalities on the rise in Africa

Dr. Mosoka Fallah, a WARN-ID collaborator, writes in a recent Nature article that despite lessons from the 2014 Ebola crisis and the development of COVID-19 vaccines, history is repeating itself with mass fatalities in Africa caused by SARS-CoV-2.

As with the Ebola outbreak, international aid appears to be coming too slowly. As of July 2021, fewer than 50 million of the 700 mission doses of the COVID-19 vaccine promised by the COVAX Initiative have been delivered. Dr. Fallah says that the remaining doses may arrive by the end of the year, but, by then, it will be too late for many.

For his part, Dr. Fallah’s private NGO, Refuge Place International has donated 114 oxygen regulators to the Ministry of Health and hospitals across Liberia.
